For more than 170 years, Island House Hotel has been a place where people come together. Guests have gathered here to celebrate special occasions, enjoy the beauty of Mackinac Island, and share meaningful moments with family and friends.

Beginning this season, Island House is introducing a new experience rooted in that same spirit of gathering. Rose’s Afternoon Tea will debut on May 30, offering guests a timeless way to slow down, connect, and enjoy one of the most beautiful settings on Mackinac Island. Afternoon tea at Island House is both a nod to the hotel’s historic past and a fresh experience designed for today’s visitors.

A Tradition Inspired by Island House History

Island House Hotel has always been more than a place to stay. It has long served as a social center of Mackinac Island. In 1892, Rose Van Allen Webster became the proprietor of Island House Hotel. Alongside her husband, she expanded and elevated the property, adding the East and West wings and refining the guest experience.

Under her leadership, Island House became known for elegant gatherings and social events. Guests enjoyed concerts, ballroom dancing accompanied by full orchestras, and afternoons spent visiting with friends. Afternoon tea feels like a natural continuation of that tradition.

While Mackinac Island has evolved over the decades, the spirit of gracious hospitality remains at the heart of Island House. Introducing afternoon tea is a meaningful way to honor that era when gathering, conversation, and thoughtful entertaining were central to the guest experience.

What to Expect During Rose’s Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea will be served inside the 1852 Grill Room, where guests will be seated near the windows overlooking the marina. The harbor views are an integral part of the experience. Boats move in and out of the harbor, the water reflects the afternoon light, and the atmosphere encourages guests to settle in and enjoy the moment. Seating is intentionally limited so that every guest can enjoy a view of the water while maintaining an intimate and relaxed setting.

Guests will select their tea before enjoying a traditional tiered presentation featuring tea sandwiches and tartlets, scones, petit fours, and miniature cakes thoughtfully prepared by Executive Chef Phil Kromer and his team.

Enhancements such as champagne and specialty cocktails will also be available for guests who wish to elevate the occasion even further. A children’s tea will be offered as well, making the experience welcoming for families. There is no formal dress code for afternoon tea, though many guests may choose to dress for the occasion as part of the fun.

A Chance to Slow Down on Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is known for its energy. Visitors fill their days biking the island, exploring Fort Mackinac, shopping downtown, and enjoying the waterfront. Afternoon tea offers something a little different. It creates a moment to pause during a busy island day. Guests can sit down, take in the harbor views, and spend time with the people they are traveling with.

Whether it becomes a highlight of a girls’ weekend, a memorable stop during a family trip, or a quiet moment for couples visiting the island, afternoon tea offers a new way to experience Mackinac Island.
