Your first time visiting Mackinac Island comes with a few unusual questions. Where do you leave your car? What happens to your luggage? How do you reach your hotel after the ferry docks?

The good news is that the trip is easier than it may sound. Once you know the arrival sequence, you can spend less time thinking about logistics and more time enjoying the island.

Start with the Ferry

Most visitors reach Mackinac Island by passenger ferry from Mackinaw City in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula or St. Ignace in the Upper Peninsula. Choose the departure point that works best for your drive, then check the ferry schedule for your travel date. Departures are more frequent in summer and become less frequent later in the season.

You’ll leave your car in a designated parking area on the mainland. Plan to arrive at the ferry dock at least 45 minutes before the departure you hope to take so you have time to park, check your bags, and board. Ferry tickets can be purchased in advance, but seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The ride across the water is part of the experience. Bring a light layer even on a warm day, especially if you plan to sit outside.

What Happens to Your Luggage?

If you’re staying at Island House Hotel, you do not need to carry your suitcase through downtown. At the mainland ferry terminal, check your luggage with a ferry attendant and tell them you’re staying at Island House. Keep the tag stub for each bag.

Carry anything you’ll need right away, including medication, valuables, and an extra layer. Luggage delivery times can vary, so it helps to have your essentials with you.

When you arrive on Mackinac Island, look for the Island House dock porter. The porter will help make sure your bags are located for delivery. Bring your luggage tag stubs to the front desk when you check in, and the hotel will deliver your bags to your room when it is ready.

Getting Around Without a Car

Mackinac Island is car-free, and you can explore much of it on foot. Downtown shops, restaurants, and waterfront views are close together, so comfortable walking shoes are one of the best things you can pack.

Bicycles are another popular way to explore. You can bring your own on the ferry for an additional charge or rent one after you arrive. Island House Bike Rental sits directly in front of the hotel, making it easy to set out for a ride along the shoreline or explore farther into the island.

For longer trips or when you would rather not walk, call a horse-drawn taxi. Taxis need to be arranged ahead of time; you cannot hail one from the street. If walking distance, hills, or stairs may affect your trip, plan those details before you arrive. Island House can help you choose a suitable room, as elevator access is limited in some parts of the historic building.

Where Should a First-Time Visitor Stay?

Location makes a difference when your transportation is your own two feet. For a first visit, look for a hotel that makes it easy to reach the ferry docks, explore downtown, and return for a break without building your day around a ride.

Island House Hotel is on Main Street across from the Mackinac Island State Harbor, about a five-minute walk from downtown. Marquette Park and Fort Mackinac are nearby, and the hotel is within walking distance of the ferry docks. You can head into town for dinner, rent a bike outside the hotel, or settle into a rocking chair overlooking the harbor.

The setting has a story of its own. Established in 1852, Island House is Mackinac Island’s oldest operating hotel. Its historic character is part of the stay, alongside waterfront views and the convenience of having dining on-site.

Make Your First Day Easy

You do not need to fit the whole island into your first afternoon. After the ferry arrives, meet the dock porter and walk to Island House. If your room is not ready, the front desk can hold your belongings while you explore. Check-in begins at 4 p.m.

Take a walk through downtown, spend some time by the water, or grab a bite to eat in at a nearby restaurant. Later, return to the hotel and decide what you want more of tomorrow: a bicycle ride, a historic site, or simply relaxing on the porch.

That is one of the pleasures of staying overnight. Once the day visitors depart, you have time to enjoy the island without watching the clock.

Ready to Plan Your First Visit?

Start by choosing your travel dates and checking ferry schedules. Then explore the rooms at Island House Hotel and find a place to make your first Mackinac Island stay feel easy from the moment you arrive.
